AMBITION

bp’s Remediation Management (RM) group wanted to improve safety protocols throughout their remediation operations and activities. Remediation activities at retail sites, refineries, and exploration sites are critical in the oil and gas industry. Proper safety protocols are essential, as inadequate physical barriers or fast-moving vehicles and heavy equipment can harm employees and contractors and increase the risk of site safety issues. RM continuously explores how to optimize safety using new technologies. As part of this objective, RM collected critical safety-related data to find more intuitive ways to gain insights about conditions and compliance.

RM sought to leverage Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and map-based interfaces to monitor this safety information more intuitively. RM also wanted to consolidate all users (including the many contractors engaged in remediation activities) on a scalable site survey safety application. In addition to efficiency gains, this would enable more robust safety reporting and compliance by helping field workers adopt more substantial safety procedures.

ACTION

RM worked with Wipro’s geospatial team to build a map-based site survey application and dashboard powered by bp’s One Map geospatial enterprise platform. RM sought to integrate survey information with geospatial information in near-real time and leverage this data integration to build easy-to-use, map-based dashboards for business users.

The resulting safety application synthesized information from survey questions, site images, and geographical context from One Map to generate a holistic picture of remediation sites. The safety application recorded all survey information in near-real time, integrating it with the geospatial system using an advanced data transformation process to structure and display all active site-survey information as popup map elements. Meanwhile, a filterable dashboard provides survey summaries to business users, allowing them to identify and address potential safety risks efficiently. A built-in “learning opportunity” report also enables safety administrators to make recommendations that enhance field user awareness of better safety practices.

AMBITIONS REALIZED

The application now drives continuous safety improvements at remediation sites, delivering a seamless user experience for business stakeholders and field workers who need to access RM site survey data. Using the map-based interface, users can instantly pull up survey summaries for each region and drill down into more detailed survey information with a single click. This ease of access encourages collaboration across suppliers and improves knowledge sharing across the field. It also enhances the ability of contractors to manage and ensure remediation site safety.

The application also enables continuous learning for field users, who now receive prompt input on safety level learnings via the RM site survey application rather than through periodic reports, allowing them to quickly improve safety parameters and continuously build their knowledge of safety principles. Due to these successes, RM now aims to scale the system to all remediation sites around the world, and it plans to work with Wipro’s geospatial team to extend the application to other bp business units beyond Remediation Management.
